Countdown 10-10

Countdown Series

Countdown is a global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. Watch the talks, interviews and performances from the Countdown Global Launch, a virtual event on October 10, 2020 featuring five curated sessions, and learn more about how to take action on climate change at countdown.ted.com.

The 6 hour TED Countdown 10-10 showed a segment with Jane Goodall on the Trillion Tree Project.  This connected with our WISE Jane Goodall Conversations.

TWO years ago, British ecologist Tom Crowther set up a lab at ETH Zurich in Switzerland with the aim of doing high-impact science to show how and where we can restore the planet. His 30-strong team is already making waves. Crowther’s lab typically starts by counting things – from trees to nematodes – before bringing the numbers together to see global trends and quantify the effects of potential interventions.

My notes and comments:

  • CA uses more energy on video games … time to build affordable pedal powered stationary bikes to create the energy to drive computing devices. Win-win get exercise and limit screen time when online.
  • Cement production 8% of carbon emissions – cure concrete with CO2, not water – change chemistry – reducing carbon footprint 70% and does not use water.
  • Cameroon activist – need more of this!  Honey wine and juice = income = gender equity = building a forest generation
  • Sharing water – time lapse photography
  • Machine Learning data – see where trees grow naturally. Global Tree Restoration Potential
  • IKEA presented – Could they hire staff to scale and sustain outdoor learning spaces where conversation starts?
  • Question – Can you grow economy without fossil fuel?
